The Situation
Percheron supported a large-scale transmission infrastructure project in a remote area where access to the right-of-way was extremely limited. A single ranch road provided one of the few viable access routes to a significant section of the project, making it essential for the movement of crews, materials, and equipment.
The road's use helped avoid more costly construction alternatives and improved access to remote work areas. However, the increased traffic accelerated wear on an already aging and substandard roadway. Following restoration activities, the area experienced unusually heavy rainfall, which caused additional deterioration and raised questions regarding the cause and extent of the damage. Project stakeholders needed a clear, objective way to distinguish pre-existing road conditions from impacts directly related to construction activities.
The Strategy
Recognizing the importance of accurate documentation, our team implemented a comprehensive road condition tracking program from the outset of project activities. We worked with landowner representatives to identify and document road conditions using GPS-stamped photographs, geotagged field data, and video recordings captured throughout the project lifecycle.
Documentation was collected before significant use of the road, during periods of heavy traffic, after restoration activities, and again following major weather events. By maintaining a detailed visual record of conditions over time, we created an objective basis for evaluating road impacts, identifying pre-existing deficiencies, and validating restoration efforts.
The Success
Although restoration discussions remain ongoing, the extensive documentation program has provided stakeholders with clear and defensible evidence regarding road conditions throughout the project. The availability of timestamped photos, geotagged records, and video footage has reduced uncertainty, minimized disputes, and improved transparency among all parties involved.
